ICV Islamophobia Support Service

Islamophobia Support is a free community service dedicated to providing holistic support to the wider Victorian Muslim community who have been impacted by Islamophobia. We are committed to providing individualised support that addresses the unique needs and challenges faced by the community as our mission is driven by the theory of change and outcomes framework. We focus on providing individual support, developing opportunities for education and empowerment, and strengthen collaboration with organisations and communities to improve support available for Victorian Muslims.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

The ICV has agreements with all the following referral psychologists and counsellors to ensure their professional and cultural competence. All listed psychologists and counsellors are registered with, and regulated by associations which commit them to ethical, honest, safe and fair services. They have all provided information to the ICV to demonstrate their qualifications, registrations, memberships and ability to provide culturally appropriate services.

Esma is a clinical psychologist experienced with providing psychological assessment, intervention and support to children, adolescents and adults. She can provide culturally sensitive services for members of the community who may have experienced (or witnessed) racism, discrimination, bullying or Islamophobia, and require support in dealing with fear, anxiety and trauma. Esma is qualified to provide Eye Movement & Desensitisation Processing therapy.

Monique is a principal psychologist experienced with supporting young people, parents and adults who are experiencing fears, anxiety and trauma resulting from racist bullying, violent incidents of Islamophobia and general anxiety arising from non-specific incidents of Islamophobia. She is fluent in the use of the following therapies with clients from culturally and faith diverse backgrounds: Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Strength-based therapy, Schema therapy, Interpersonal Therapy and Boundaries therapy. CENTRE FOR MUSLIM WELLBEING

The Centre for Muslim Wellbeing (CMW) aims to increase the wellbeing of Muslim communities, through focusing on prevention and early intervention, raising awareness around the issues of mental health and social isolation within community and ensuring community members have the support they need before they get to crisis. CMW has compiled a database of culturally responsive mental health practitioners and services that meet the needs of multicultural communities, including psychologists, counsellors, social workers and other health professionals. The list includes practitioners and services that are bilingual, offer telehealth, accept mental health treatment plans, have cultural intelligence (CQ) training and are all registered with their relevant health regulatory body. CMW’s team also includes a “navigator,” someone who community members can call with questions and/or seek support in navigating the service system. This person will answer questions from community members and refer individuals onto the appropriate and accredited services when required.

Muslim Legal Network’s free Legal Referral Service seeks to provide the wider Victorian Muslim community with a trusted legal referral service for legal advice, assistance and court representation. The referral panel includes community legal centres, government organisations, a panel of member practitioners and accredited specialists.

INNER MELBOURNE COMMUNITY LEGAL

Inner Melbourne Community Legal (IMCL) is a generalist legal practice with core capabilities across all areas of law connected with common life problems: family law, family violence, criminal law, fines, tenancy, debt and victims of crime. They also have a co-located financial counsellor. IMCL provides a graduated level of service depending on client need, encompassing legal advice, tasks, casework and court or tribunal representation. They deliver legal education primarily to community service workers to train them to identify common life problems that have a legal solution, and refer people to IMCL for legal assistance. IMCL assists people who live, work, study or access services in the City of Melbourne.

ISLAMOPHOBIA POSITION STATEMENT

 

The Islamic Council of Victoria is deeply committed to advocating for the wellbeing and rights of Victoria Muslims

 

The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) recognises that Islamophobia disrupts socio-cultural harmony and negatively affects the wider Victorian Muslim community.

 

Through our advocacy efforts and Islamophobia Support service, we are committed to responding to Islamophobia, empowering Victorian Muslim communities and promoting social inclusion.

 

To outline our commitment to addressing Islamophobia, we worked with community activists, researchers and friends of the ICV to develop the Islamophobia Position Statement.

 

The Islamophobia Position Statement serves to comprehensively examine the context, contributing factors and consequences of Islamophobia. It also outlines recommendations for collaboratively addressing Islamophobia, and commits the ICV to specific implementation efforts and actions.

 

The ICV sincerely welcomes constructive engagement and future collaboration in response to this Position Statement. Please direct any enquiries or feedback to islamophobiasupport@icv.org.au.
